Choir
Mathew Coronado is an educator and professional vocalist living in Grand Junction, Colorado. He is currently the director of vocal music at Central High School in Grand Junction. There, Mathew directs six different vocal ensembles and teaches music appreciation. Ensembles under his direction have received superior and best in class ratings from the Colorado West Music Festival and CHSAA Large Group Festival. Mathew also is the music director for musical theatre productions at Central HS and has directed shows such as The Addams Family and Newsies. Previously, Mathew had a 5-year tenure as director of choirs and music director for musicals at Gunnison Middle and High School in Gunnison, Colorado. There, his groups received high marks at music competitions, and he began several ensembles such as Belle Voix (advanced treble choir), Just for Show (show choir), and the GMS Summer Show Choir. Mathew music directed such musicals as The Little Mermaid and Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory and was proud to have fostered a community support of music and the arts in Gunnison.
Mathew is passionate about performance as well as music education. He has sung with the Western Colorado Chorale, the Grand Junction Symphony Chorus, Vocal Junction, and the Gunnison Arts Center Singers. He has been a featured as the Tenor soloist in Handel’s’ Messiah with the Messiah Choral Society of Grand Junction and in several works with the First Presbyterian Church of Grand Junction (J. S. Bach’s Christmas Oratorio, Stainer’s The Crucifixion, Dubois’ Seven Last Words of Christ), and has performed a solo vocal recital at the United Church of the San Juans in Ridgeway, Colorado. Mathew is passionate about bringing this performance experience to enrich student’s singing during rehearsal and through teaching private voice lessons.
A native of rural Wyoming, Mathew earned a Bachelor of Arts in Music Education K-12 and Performance from Colorado Mesa University and a Master of Music Education with an Emphasis in Choral Conducting from CU Boulder. Mathew also participated in a conducting fellowship with Dr. John Howard at the First Presbyterian Church of Grand Junction. When not teaching or performing, you can find Mathew skiing, hiking, mountain biking, traveling, and enjoying local cuisine with his partner Maxwell and their dog Atticus.
